The "Queen of the Night" flowers of the Selenicereus cactus open only at night. These large flowers with long, thin outer petals generally bloom in the summer. The flower only opens once, from nighttime to dawn, giving off a powerful fragrance. The exact origin of the Selenicereus is unknown but probably comes from Mexico, Brazil or the Greater Antilles.

The white vanilla flowers produce a fruit that ripens in 8 to 9 months. Vanilla beans are harvested just before they are ripe and undergo a ripening process for 34 months.
