NHS Blood Pressure Check

During your appointment, you will have your blood pressure taken and depending on the result, you may be provided with healthy living advice, given a blood pressure monitor to take home with you and return later or advised to see a GP.

Optional BMI & Waist Circumference Measurement

If you choose to, you will be weighed, your height measured, and your waist circumference measured. Your height and weight are used to work out your BMI. Measuring your waist circumference indicates your visceral fat or the fat that coats your organs. These checks can help assess your risk of developing certain health conditions.

If you're under 40, you may be eligible if your GP has referred you to have a blood pressure check or if you have a recognised family history of hypertension (at the pharmacist's discretion).

Frequently asked questions

Health MOT at Boots is a free service for those eligible.

Your blood pressure is the pressure of blood in your arteries. It’s the force that your heart uses to pump blood around your body. Your body needs this pressure to get the blood moving to your brain and around the rest of your body. It’s normal for your blood pressure to change throughout the day but if it remains high (even when resting), this means you might have high blood pressure. High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a serious condition where your heart has to consistently work harder to pump blood around your body.

High blood pressure (hypertension) is a condition which can be controlled to reduce your risk of a heart attack, stroke, or other cardiovascular disease. According to Public Health England, in the UK, there are about 5.5 million adults who have high blood pressure without even knowing it, since high blood pressure itself rarely causes symptoms. The British Heart Foundation estimates that high blood pressure causes over 50% of heart attacks and strokes.

In many cases, it’s not clear what causes high blood pressure, but there are lifestyle factors which may increase your risk, or it may be caused by an underlying health condition. For more information read our article about high blood pressure. If you’re worried about your blood pressure, speak to your GP.

If you are an adult aged 18 and over, selected Boots stores in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and one store in England offer a Private Hypertension Service36. Here you can have your blood pressure checked by one of our healthcare professionals. You will receive personalised advice following the consultation, and a copy of your results and advice to take away. The Private Hypertension Service is not suitable for pregnant women, who will be eligible for a free blood pressure check as part of routine check-ups with their midwife or GP. The service is also not suitable for those with a diagnosis of atrial fibrillation or an irregular heartbeat. If you are over 18 years old you can also take the Healthier You Review quiz28 to help you discover whether your health is on the right track.
