What is HPV (Human Papillomavirus)?

HPV is a common virus that often affects the mouth, throat and genital area. There are over 200 types of HPV. Most types are harmless, but infection with some types of HPV can lead to cervical cancer, cancer of the vagina or vulva, cancer of the anus, or genital warts.

Eight in ten people will get an HPV infection at some point in their lives. It’s easy to catch and has no symptoms, so you may not know if you have it. The risk of becoming infected increases with the number of sexual partners and is more likely if you started having sex at a younger age.

Most cases are cleared from the body by the immune system, but some types of HPV infection can persist and lead to:

  • cervical cancer
  • cancer of the vagina or vulva
  • cancer of the anus
  • genital warts

Further information about the risks of HPV infection can be found in our service leaflets: English - 简体中文

The Boots HPV Vaccination Service is a non-NHS service for adolescents and adults aged 12 to 45 at the time of the first dose*. A complete course consists of either one, two, or three doses:

  • Customers aged under 25 only need one dose
  • Customers aged 25 and over should have two doses at least six months apart
  • Customers who are HIV positive or who have a weakened immune system need three doses within a 4 to 6 month period

You can choose to have more than the recommended number of doses for your age if you prefer, up to a maximum of three doses. Please discuss this with the healthcare professional during your first appointment.

This service isn’t suitable for anyone who:

  • is pregnant or trying for a baby
  • is taking anticoagulants (blood thinning medication)
  • has a blood disorder that can cause bleeding for longer than usual

This isn’t a complete list and suitability will be checked before the vaccination is given.

Further information can be found in our service leaflets: English - 简体中文

Each vaccination will be given in the upper arm so it’s helpful to wear short sleeves or loose sleeves that can be rolled up.

The healthcare professional will talk to you about possible side effects before the vaccination. See our FAQs for more information.

Immunisation against HPV is provided as part of the NHS childhood vaccination programme and is routinely offered to adolescents aged 12 to 13††. If you or your child missed the vaccination in school or have come to the UK from overseas and are registered with a GP practice, you can access the free vaccination via the NHS up until your 25th birthday.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) are also eligible to be vaccinated for free on the NHS at a sexual health or HIV clinic, up to and including 45 years of age††.

Transgender people are eligible if their risk of getting HPV is similar to that of MSM who are eligible for the HPV vaccines. If trans men have previously completed a course of HPV vaccination as part of the school vaccination programme, no further doses are needed††.
