BOOTS MENOPAUSE & ME™
What is menopause?
Menopause is a normal and natural part of life’s journey. It’s usually marked when periods stop due to lower hormone levels, around the ages of 45-55. Everyone is different, so sometimes it can happen earlier or later.
Stages of menopause
Perimenopause
Perimenopause is characterised by irregular cycles of ovulation and menstruation. Perimenopause can start at different ages and is the stage when you may begin to experience different signs and symptoms caused by fluctuating oestrogen levels. Everyone is different but some signs and symptoms include; tiredness and low energy, mood changes, sleep disturbances and vaginal dryness.
Menopause
This is when periods stop and ovaries lose their reproductive function. In the UK the average age of menopause is 51, but in a small number of cases, some may experience an earlier menopause. You reach menopause when you have not had a period for 12 months.
Postmenopause
Usually marked by no periods for 12 months or more and lasts for the rest of life. During this time, many signs and symptoms of menopause may gradually decrease, but the risk of osteoporosis and heart disease may increase, as expected, mainly due to the general ageing process.
What happens?
During perimenopause, levels of hormones oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone fluctuate. This can last for up to 10 years before periods stop altogether. Menopause then occurs when the ovaries no longer produce eggs and generate much lower levels of hormones. The fluctuating levels, and over time, the falling levels of these hormones, are the cause of many of the signs and symptoms commonly experienced.
