The entrepreneur reveals how she went from stay-at-home mum to creator of one of the world’s most sought-after skincare brands
I always wanted to be a mum and wife. I went to university but, ultimately, I wanted to settle down. I now have four children and live in Texas – I never dreamed I’d be running my own business, too.
I started with a side hustle selling skincare. I sold a cleansing bar from home for a few years and was passionate about helping customers find the right products. That was the start of my research into ingredients.
The name Drunk Elephant came about because I love the oil from marula fruit – it’s highly absorbable and doesn’t leave a residue. While researching the oil, I found videos of elephants eating the fruit and stumbling around because it makes them ‘drunk’! I then designed every ingredient myself, literally on paper.
I’m a firm believer that cleansing in the morning is a mistake. Cleanse well at night and follow with products for glowing skin.
I think of our skincare routines as ‘smoothies’. Combine any Drunk Elephant serums, creams or oils and apply. For mornings, I use C-Firma Day Serum, Lala Retro Whipped Cream and A-Passioni Retinol Cream. At night, my go-to smoothie is Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil, B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum, TLC Framboos Glycolic Night Serum and Protini Polypeptide Cream.
Drunk Elephant is successful because it works. Customers are discovering it wasn’t their ‘skin problems’ after all – it was the ingredients they were putting on it. They see a difference.
TIFFANY'S MUST-HAVES
Drunk Elephant Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil is really special to me, as it’s what the brand is all about.
For a little brightness around my eyes, I reach for YSL Touche Éclat Illuminating Pen. It’s a classic and I love the texture.
I don’t leave the house without NARS Climax Extreme Mascara on my lashes. It gives great coverage in one coat.
To help support my immune system, I make sure I take supplements every day, including vitamin C and zinc.
