Discover your go-to guide with Jerome Russell

The coronavirus lockdown taught us a thing or two about haircare. From learning to master the art of box dying to perfecting the mighty root touch-up – we all deserve a pat on the back. One thing many of us perhaps didn’t conquer? Going blonde.

Although your fave hairdressers may be back up and running, there’s no reason you can’t continue to take matters into your own hands. Here, colour specialists, Jerome Russell, reveal genius tips and tricks to help you get Rapunzel-esque hair at home, all for a fraction of the salon price.

Find your shade

At-home hair colour is super convenient, but going blonde can be tricky.

Before you get started, you’ll need to determine your base colour. The best way to do this is to look at your roots or check the base of your parting.

For base shades that match the images above, you’ll want to go with the Jerome Russell Blonding & Highlighting Kit No.1.

Alternatively, if your base shade matches any of these, opt for the Jerome Russell Blonding & Highlighting Kit No.2.

Prep like a boss

For the best results, make sure you do your 48-hour hair strand test before you get to work. This will help to confirm your unique development time, so you can get your dream shade of blonde.

If you’ve bleached your hair or used a box dye in the past, chances are you’ll get slightly different results to someone that’s a natural brunette. Don’t worry though, this is just due to a build-up of product which changes the hair’s structure.

Seal the deal

With patience and good quality products, everyone can get their dream colour. Just remember that everyone’s hair is different and what works for others may not work for you.

If your natural hair is super-dark brown, you might need another session of bleaching before you achieve your ideal lift. Depending on your hair colour, you might also need to use a toner afterwards. From dirty blonde to ash blonde, you can take your pick from the collection of Jerome Russell Bblonde toners.

Top tips for dying your hair blonde

Before you take the blonde plunge, there’s a couple of things you can do to ensure your locks look and feel their best.

• Book yourself in for a trim before you crack open the dye

• Treat your locks to a deep conditioning treatment

• We said it before and we’ll say it again, do your 48-hour hair strand and skin sensitivity test

• Check you have enough dye – if your hair is longer than shoulder length, or if it’s super-thick, you’ll probably need two kits

Step-by-step guide for blonde hair

Before you dive in, remember to read the packet instructions carefully and slip your protective gloves on. Safety first!

Step 1 – Mix it real good

First up, mix the Jerome Russell Bblonde powder bleach sachet and cream peroxide as per instructions. Combine thoroughly until there’s no lumps or bumps and the mixture’s nice and smooth.

Step 2 – Divide and conquer

Next, divide your hair into sections – this will help ensure it all gets coated evenly. No-one wants patchy locks!

Step 3 – Get to work

If this is your first time bleaching, start with your ends and then apply to your roots. If you’re applying to re-growth (and your ends are lighter) then start with your roots before applying to your ends. Easy, right?

Step 4 – Kick back and relax

Leave the dye to work its magic for 25-45 minutes. Your individual developing time will be shown by the 48-hour hair strand test you did (that’s why you shouldn’t skip it!)

Once your time’s up, rinse out thoroughly.

Step 5 – Finishing touches

Last (but not least), apply the Jerome Russell Deep Conditioning Shampoo included in your Maximum Blonding Kit. Rinse thoroughly et voila!

Now all that’s left to do is dry, style and rock your new look! Let’s see whether blondes really do have more fun…
