Celebrity hair stylist & Mark Hill ambassador shares his tips & tricks for heatless hair styling from home
If there's even been a time to give your hair a little extra TLC, it’s now. So, forget the styling tools for a while, and wave goodbye to heat damage, because I’m here to show you that styling without heat doesn’t have to be complicated.
Sit back, grab a cuppa, and let me share my top go-tos.
Give heat a break
It won’t be long until we’re getting glammed up for work and play. But in the meantime, get your hands on a hair mask. I’d recommend using one once or twice a week – you’ll definitely see a difference! My go-to is the Hydrating Treatment from The Hair Lab by Mark Hill. Not only is it vegan, but it’s FILLED with oils, proteins and vitamins to restore your hair from the inside out. Apply this to washed and towel dried hair (remember to squeeze your locks to get rid of any excess water), then apply a healthy amount of the mask. Let it sit for at least 20 minutes – you can even leave it overnight if you fancy! When you’re ready to wash it out, use cool water – the colder temperature will help seal the cuticles in your hair, locking in all that goodness.
My trick of the trade? If you place a shower cap, plastic cap, or hair wrap over your locks while the mask is on, it’ll lock in heat and let the mask sink deeper into the cuticles.
Heatless styling
Heatless curls
You’ve probably seen the heatless curl hack that’s going around the internet – you know, the one where you use a dressing gown belt? Oh, you don’t? Let me explain!
If you want to wake up with big bouncy waves, simply take a dressing gown belt (or even a pair of socks or tights), then twist your hair around it and sleep in it. When you wake up, simply unravel your hair then lightly brush through with the Mark Hill Style Addict Curl Comb. To finish, run some oil or a serum through your ends et voila!
Here’s everything you’ll need:
• Mark Hill Style Addict Curl Comb
• Style Addict Extreme Volume Spray
• The Hair Lab by Mark Hill Smoothing Serum
• The Hair Lab by Mark Hill Anti Humidity Spray
• The Hair Lab by Mark Hill Hydrating Moroccan Argan Oil
Braids or plaits
A heatless hair style I love to see people rock is a braid or plait. A ponytail plait, a crown braid, a Dutch braid, French plaits, cornrows or box braids (to name a few) not only look beautiful, but they’re a great way to protect your natural hair, too. You can add accessories, such as scarves, clips, beads and chains to inject your own spin and flare. An extra bonus is that once you take your hair out of the braid or plait, you can have the most effortless heatless waves.
Here’s everything you’ll need:
• The Hair Lab by Mark Hill Smoothing Serum
• The Hair Lab by Mark Hill Hydrating Moroccan Argan Oil
• Mark Hill Style Addict Extreme Hairspray
Air dry
Lots of people are scared to let their hair dry naturally, but it’s a brilliant way to keep the heat away, and embrace what you were blessed with. You just need to know how to manage it and which products are right for you.
For my curly haired beauties
Moisture is your friend! Here’s how to activate the curl but leave the frizz behind.
The Hydrating Range from The Hair Lab by Mark Hill is going to give your hair everything it needs to unlock its true potential. The range is packed with essential oils, and Moroccan argan oil, which will work from the inside out to nourish your curls.
The Hair Lab by Mark Hill’s Anti Humidity Spray will hold the shape of your curls, add a shine and help keep the frizz at bay. If sprays aren’t for you, I’d suggest The Hair Lab by Mark Hill’s Hydrating Moroccan Argan Oil. Just add a few pumps to your hands, rub them together, then twirl the product into your curls.
For those with straighter hair types
When it comes to straighter hair, we’ve got a couple of options.
The One Shampoo and Conditioner are great all-rounders, but if your hair is on the weaker or thinner side, The Hair Lab by Mark Hill’s Strengthening Growth range may be better suited to you.
My all-time favourite product for straighter hair is The Hair Lab by Mark Hill’s Strengthening Growth Tonic. The leave-in formula energises the root bulb and helps stimulate growth. Plus, it helps build thickness, texture and strength.
Try to make sure you’re using an oil or serum through the lengths and ends to avoid dryness and frizz. My recommendation? The Hair Lab by Mark Hill’s Smoothing Serum. And finally, lock in the silkiness with the Anti Humidity Spray from The Hair Lab by Mark Hill. Perfect!
Go get 'em!
