Common infant feeding issues
Over half of babies will experience a feeding issue in the first six months of life
In the first few weeks and months of your baby’s life it is not unusual to come across a few feeding issues or tummy troubles along the way. Most feeding issues occur in the first six months of your baby’s life and are usually resolved by 12 months. This makes sense when you think that your baby’s digestive system is still maturing and getting used to digesting milk.
Newborn feeding issues can include reflux, colic and constipation but can also include issues such as allergies and intolerances.
SMA® Anti-Reflux
SMA® Anti-Reflux – food for special medical purposes. For the dietary management of frequent reflux and regurgitation. Suitable from birth to 12 months. This formula should be used under medical supervision - please seek advice from your GP. Thickened formula may require a fast flow teat. Do not use with other feed thickeners or antacids.
What is reflux? Reflux affects over 40% of babies in the first year of life. Reflux often occurs because a baby’s digestive system is immature. SMA® Anti-Reflux is a nutritionally complete formula for the dietary management of babies with significant reflux (regurgitation/spitting up). It can be used as the sole source of nutrition from birth in place of your usual formula feed and can be mixed with foods once weaning has begun. You may notice a change in baby’s stool when changing to SMA® Anti-Reflux. This is due to the different ingredients and is normal.
Not all formulas mix the same. SMA® Anti-Reflux is a thickened formula – please follow the preparation instructions on the back of the pack carefully. SMA® Anti-Reflux can be fed immediately after preparation. Please test the temperature by shaking a few drops onto the inside of your wrist - milk should be lukewarm.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:
We believe that breastfeeding is the ideal nutritional start for babies and we fully support the World Health Organization’s recommendation of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life followed by the introduction of adequate nutritious complementary foods along with continued breastfeeding up to two years of age. We also recognise that breastfeeding is not always an option for parents. We recommend that you speak to your healthcare professional about how to feed your baby and seek advice on when to introduce complementary feeding. If you choose not to breastfeed, please remember that such a decision can be difficult to reverse and has social and financial implications. Introducing partial bottle-feeding will reduce the supply of breast milk. Infant formula should always be prepared, used and stored as instructed on the label in order to avoid risks to a baby’s health.
